Olive Oil prevents Diabetes


Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease in which blood sugar levels are increased due to insulin resistance. The body is able to produce body-specific insulin but this is not properly recognized and used by the body, thus the blood glucose cannot be decreased.

If the blood glucose level rises, it will cause serious consequences in the long run. Inflammation in the body, damaged blood vessels and organs; kidney failure, heart disease, eye problems and nervous system diseases are just a few of them.

There are some foods that help the body regulate its blood glucose level. Especially with regular consumption, they help to reduce the consequences of diabetes. Out of all such foods, olive oil comes in first place as a miracle worker!

Olive oil is rich in antioxidants and monounsaturated fatty acids that protect our blood vessels. These have an anti-inflammatory effect and protect against the damage of free radicals, which destroy healthy tissue. Regular consumption of olive oil reduces insulin resistance, maintains blood glucose levels and prevents diabetes.

A group of Spanish scientists conducted a long-term study to  examine the positive effects of the Mediterranean diet with olive oil. They concluded that increased consumption of olive oil reduced the risk of diabetes by 40 percent. What was significant is that this risk reduction was achieved without any sports or weight loss. In another study, the effect of a Mediterranean-type meal with added extra virgin olive oil was tested. Blood glucose and lipid profile were investigated in 25 healthy subjects. First, a group of volunteers received a Mediterranean-type meal with or without the added10gr extra virgin olive oil (10 grams). After two hours blood samples and blood cholesterol values were examined. A significant decrease was observed in blood sugar and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels of those in the olive oil group.

Olive oil also supports weight loss! That is an advantage for type 2 diabetics too.

But you should prefer extra virgin olive oil because the refined olive oil is mostly strongly heated and so the molecular structure of the olives will be changed and the healthy omega-3 fatty acid content will be destroyed.
