The most effective treatment of cancer is to prevent it. Here are eleven ways to succeed in this!

  • Stay active.

Daily motion and sport can significantly lower the risk of getting any type of cancer.

  • Keep your diet healthy and simple.

Increase your general intake of fruits and vegetables as it lowers the risk of prostate and breast cancer, which are among the most common types of cancers in Western countries.

  • Avoid alcohol.

Even a minimal alcohol intake increases the risk of getting any type of cancer, especially liver and pancreas cancer.

  • Control your BMI.

Several studies have concluded that a high body mass index (BMI) increases the risk of developing colorectal cancer and other cancers related to the gastrointestinal tract.

  • Quit smoking.

Smoking increases the risks of getting lung, pancreas, and bladder cancers by 22%.

  • Avoid risky behaviour.

Most cancers, especially oral and urogenital cancers, are caused by viruses such as Human papillomavirus (HPV), HIV, and hepatitis which are all transmitted by direct contact with the excretions of other humans.

  • Avoid any type of radiation.

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun can damage your skin cells and ultimately cause skin cancer. It is important to stay in cover when the radiation from the sun is high.

  • Vaccinate against bacteria and viruses.

Vaccinate yourself against bacteria and viruses that are known to cause some types of cancer, for example, hepatitis B.

  • Make use of screening programs in your country.

Some countries have special screening programs for the eldery or risk-groups in general. It is important to make use of such screening opportunities as it can detect cancers in the early stages.

  • Know the carcinogenic exposures and avoid them.

Some occupations are known to have a higher risk of getting some types of cancers due to the chemical or biological exposures. Keep in mind that asbestos, benzene, arsenic, wood dust, formaldehyde, ionized radiation and coal are known carcinogens that can cause cancer in the long run.

  • Regularly visit your family doctor if you are genetically predisposed.

If you are already genetically predisposed to any type of cancer (for example if more than two close family members either have or have died of cancer) you should stay in close contact with your family doctor for regular health controls.

Always bear in mind that cancer is indeed preventable. Our lifestyle, behavioural and dietary choices are all under the control of our own will – and so is the choice to make personal changes.
